Diamond Certification in Nepal 2026 — What SGL Certification Means and Why It Matters. When you buy a diamond ring in Nepal, the certificate that comes with the stone is just as important as the stone itself. This guide explains what diamond certification is, why Sazuna issues SGL certificates on every diamond above 0.18 carat, and how to read a certificate so you know exactly what you are paying for.
What is a diamond certificate?
A diamond certificate (also called a “diamond grading report”) is an independent, third-party document that records a diamond’s characteristics — primarily the 4Cs (carat, cut, colour, clarity), and often additional details like measurements, fluorescence, and any treatments. The certificate is your permanent record of what the diamond is, independent of the seller.
SGL — Solitaire Gemological Laboratories
Sazuna’s diamonds above 0.18 carat are graded by Solitaire Gemological Laboratories (SGL), an internationally recognised gemmological laboratory. Every SGL certificate includes:
- The 4Cs — carat weight, cut grade, colour grade, clarity grade.
- The diamond’s measurements in mm.
- The shape and cutting style (round brilliant, princess, oval, etc.).
- A unique report number — your reference for the specific stone.
- Treatment disclosure if applicable.
The SGL certificate is included in the box with your Sazuna diamond ring, pendant, earrings or other piece (for diamonds 0.18 ct and above).
Why certification protects you
Without a certificate, you are relying on the seller’s word for what the diamond is. With an SGL certificate, you have a permanent, independent record of the stone’s grade. That matters when:
- You want to verify what you paid for matches what you received.
- You want to compare quotes from different sellers — same grade, real comparison.
- You want to exchange or resell the piece in future.
- You want to insure the jewellery.
- You want to pass the piece on as an heirloom with proper provenance.
How to read your SGL certificate
- Find the carat weight. Diamond weights are quoted to two decimal places (e.g., 0.52 ct).
- Find the cut grade. Excellent / Very Good / Good / Fair / Poor. Higher is better — cut controls sparkle.
- Find the colour grade. D–Z scale. D is colourless; G–H is great value for the look.
- Find the clarity grade. FL–I3. VS1–VS2 are eye-clean and good value.
- Check the measurements. Diameter in mm tells you the visual size of the stone.
- Note the report number. Keep this — it is your reference for this specific diamond.
What about gold certification?
Diamonds are certified by gemmological labs like SGL. Gold in Nepal is verified by the karatage stamping, which is stamped on every gold piece and certifies the karatage. karatage stamping is mandatory on gold sold in Nepal, and Sazuna includes it on every gold piece. So a Sazuna diamond ring has SGL certification on the stone and karatage stamping on the gold — both layers of verification.
How to verify your certificate
SGL provides certificate verification via its laboratory records. If you ever want to confirm your certificate is genuine, take it to the issuing lab or contact them with the report number on the certificate.
